A day in the life of a Mount Holyoke student: Spring Fever, Spring Break, and Spring Flower Show

by Elana Tsogt-Erdene ’17 The campus-wide excitement for Wednesday, March 9th was palpable in the air. After a strange winter marked by both uncharacteristically warm bouts and snow days, the predicted high of 73 °F expected this Wednesday was proof that it was here at last: shorts weather, sunning on Skinner Green, sunglasses, and smoothies—in other words: everything good. The fact that this much-welcomed start of warm weather coincided with the final days leading up to mid-semester break did not hurt. Mount Holyoke was ready for spring. As students cranked out papers,… Read More

A day in the life of a Mount Holyoke student: The first days of February…

by Elana Tsogt-Erdene ’17 The third full week of the spring 2016 semester rolled around and it felt just like that: spring. On Tuesday, I didn’t even bother to wear my jacket and instead held it as I went about my day, attending class, meeting with friends for dinner, reading in the library, and generally enjoying life. “Winter seems to have skipped South Hadley altogether,” I thought, “spring has arrived.” Or at least it I thought it did until approximately 7:14am this Friday morning when I awoke to a snowy wonderland. Winter… Read More

Woyneab Habte ’17 empowering Ethiopian college women through On-Her-Own

“When financial difficulties are combined with disempowerment, people don’t have the vision or the strength to say, ‘I’ll stay hungry before I sell myself.’ My job made me think of bringing the same model to my former university, because it changed my life. I want to empower students.” Woyneab Habte ’17 first attended university for two semesters in her home country of Ethiopia before coming to Mount Holyoke. At the university, she was shocked to find a widespread sex trade among her female classmates, who were struggling to pay for food, never… Read More

With the MHC community, there’s always a home for the holidays

Each year during the holidays, the MHC community opens their doors to current students, like Simonsenkosi Nkomboni ’17, who aren’t able to make the long trip back home. Over the last two years, Kyle Ballou ’80 has welcomed Simonsenkosi to her New Haven, Connecticut home for the holidays. Due to financial constraints, Simonsenkosi has not returned to Zimbabwe since she first arrived on campus in 2013. Being away from her own family has been difficult but spending time with the Ballou’s has made things easier. There, Simonsenkosi is part of the family…. Read More
